What open interest tells you

Open interest is the amount of derivative exposure that remains open. Rising OI during a price move means new positions are entering the market; falling OI means positions are being closed or liquidated. The number does not tell you by itself whether the new exposure is bullish or bearish.

Read OI with funding and price

The useful question is not simply whether OI is high. Compare the direction of price, the change in OI and the funding rate. Rising price with rising OI can indicate expanding participation; a sharp price move with collapsing OI can reflect a deleveraging event. Funding adds information about which side is paying to hold perpetual exposure.

Coverage and interpretation

TradingHub uses market snapshots for open-interest context and marks missing or stale data. OI methodologies and contract units differ by venue, so normalized cross-market comparisons should be treated as analytical context rather than exact accounting of every position across the industry.
