What the indicator measures

A moving-average crossover records a change in the ordering of two averages. It is a precisely definable event, not a completed trade or evidence of a profitable strategy. The same crossover can occur in a sustained trend or repeatedly inside a range, with very different subsequent outcomes.

Calculation and units

The Studio template uses fast EMA 20 and slow EMA 50 on close prices. Cross above requires current fast > slow and prior fast ≤ slow; cross below reverses the inequalities. A fast line merely remaining above a slow line is not a new cross on every candle.

Worked educational example

If the prior fast value was 99 and slow 100, then current fast 101 and slow 100 produce a cross above. If the next fast value is 102 and slow 101, their bullish ordering remains but no second crossing event occurred. Equality at the prior observation is explicitly allowed by the condition.

Reading it without overclaiming

The averages require sufficient history; default slow EMA needs fifty closes. A crossing visible on a live candle can vanish before close. Repeated crossings incur different hypothetical costs from a single long move. Choosing fast and slow periods after seeing the outcome creates an overfitting risk.

How TradingHub implements it

This is an Indicator Studio template, not a separate checkbox in the native indicator list. It uses the Studio EMA engine and two configurable periods. The renderer shows signal markers only for candles considered complete by their timestamp and timeframe. It does not submit orders or connect to an exchange account.

Comparisons that matter

EMA and MACD share similar inputs with the crossover. Their agreement is not three independent confirmations. Study a fixed chronological sample, including failed crosses and all warmup bars, and distinguish a rule for recognizing an event from rules about entry, exit or execution.

A reproducible chart review

Open the existing Trading chart and choose the same market, interval and closed observation time as your comparison. Record every calculation parameter before changing one at a time. Match source fields, history length and the bar window. Native indicators calculate from the supplied visible slice; Indicator Studio calculates from its available chart snapshot. A difference after panning may therefore be a window or warmup effect rather than a new market event.

Limits and next lesson

The illustration uses constructed candles, not a dated market observation or a backtest. A live candle can change until it closes. Missing history, volume units and implementation conventions limit comparisons. No indicator guarantees a direction, an execution price or protection from loss. Use the related lessons to separate definitions, observed values and possible explanations; a correct quiz records learning progress, not trading competence.

Knowledge check

Is fast EMA staying above slow EMA a new crossover on every bar?

  1. Yes; every positive EMA is a buy order
  2. No; a crossover requires a change of ordering from the prior bar
  3. Yes; every bullish bar is a fresh crossover
Show explanation

The condition compares both the current and previous ordering; persistence is different from a new event.
