What the indicator measures

The Stochastic oscillator locates the latest close within a rolling high/low range. It does not measure the balance of winning and losing trades or the probability of a reversal. A reading near the top means the close is near a recent range extreme after the specified smoothing.

Calculation and units

Raw %K = 100 × (close − lowest low)/(highest high − lowest low). TradingHub’s slow variant applies an SMA to raw %K, then another SMA to produce %D. Defaults are range 14, %K smoothing 3 and %D period 3. Stochastic RSI is a different indicator and is not this built-in.

Worked educational example

For range high 110, low 90 and close 105, raw %K is 75. In a separate smoothing illustration, raw readings 50, 75 and 100 average to slow %K 75. A signal-line comparison must use the smoothed series, not substitute the latest raw value for both lines.

Reading it without overclaiming

The 80/20 levels identify selected oscillator regions. A trend can keep the close near the range high or low, producing persistent extremes. Crossing %D during consolidation can repeat frequently. A zero-width range has no meaningful location ratio; the native routine uses 50 as its neutral convention.

How TradingHub implements it

The settings expose all three periods and both levels. With 14/3/3, the first slow %K needs 16 bars and %D needs 18. Moving the lines between a pane and an overlay changes placement, not the formula. Partial current candles still change the observed close and range.

Comparisons that matter

Williams %R is an inverted range-location measure before smoothing; RSI instead uses gain/loss averages. Compare the raw definitions before combining them. A clean-looking pattern found by changing periods after observing a reversal does not validate a repeatable rule.

A reproducible chart review

Open the existing Trading chart and choose the same market, interval and closed observation time as your comparison. Record every calculation parameter before changing one at a time. Match source fields, history length and the bar window. Native indicators calculate from the supplied visible slice; Indicator Studio calculates from its available chart snapshot. A difference after panning may therefore be a window or warmup effect rather than a new market event.

Limits and next lesson

The illustration uses constructed candles, not a dated market observation or a backtest. A live candle can change until it closes. Missing history, volume units and implementation conventions limit comparisons. No indicator guarantees a direction, an execution price or protection from loss. Use the related lessons to separate definitions, observed values and possible explanations; a correct quiz records learning progress, not trading competence.

Knowledge check

Is the default 14/3/3 Stochastic the same indicator as Stochastic RSI?

  1. Yes; both always equal RSI
  2. No; it uses price highs, lows and closes directly
  3. Yes; the names are interchangeable
Show explanation

This built-in locates price within a range and smooths that result; Stochastic RSI operates on an RSI series.
