VWAP: volume weighting, rolling windows and anchor limits

VWAP compares price with a volume-weighted reference.

What the indicator measures

VWAP compares price with a volume-weighted reference. Its meaning depends on which observations are included and when accumulation starts or resets. A session VWAP, a manually anchored VWAP and a rolling VWAP can legitimately disagree. The label alone does not specify the window.

Calculation and units

TradingHub approximates each candle’s representative price as HLC3 = (high + low + close)/3. VWAP is sum(HLC3 × volume) divided by sum(volume) over the selected bars. This uses aggregated candles, not the exact prices of every transaction. A zero total volume has no defined weighted average.

Worked educational example

For fictional bars with representative prices 100 and 110 and volumes 2 and 1, VWAP is (100×2 + 110×1)/3 = 103.3333. The ordinary price average is 105. Changing which bars are included changes the result even though neither original bar has changed.

Reading it without overclaiming

Price above a VWAP means it is above that window’s weighted reference. It does not establish institutional demand, fair value or an impending reversion. A trend can remain on one side for a long time. Volume quality, window length and the still-open candle all affect how the comparison should be described.

How TradingHub implements it

The built-in setting defaults to lookback 0, meaning all bars supplied from the visible chart slice. Positive lookback selects a rolling number of bars, up to 1000. This implementation does not automatically reset at midnight and does not provide a manual event anchor. Changing the viewport can therefore move the cumulative reference.

Comparisons that matter

Compare VWAP with SMA or EMA to study the effect of weights, not to assume three independent signals. When comparing another platform, match the session, timezone, price source, volume unit and anchor first. A session-based external value cannot be used as an exact reference for this chart’s default cumulative window.

A reproducible chart review

Open the existing Trading chart and choose the same market, interval and closed observation time as your comparison. Record every calculation parameter before changing one at a time. Match source fields, history length and the bar window. Native indicators calculate from the supplied visible slice; Indicator Studio calculates from its available chart snapshot. A difference after panning may therefore be a window or warmup effect rather than a new market event.

Limits and next lesson

The illustration uses constructed candles, not a dated market observation or a backtest. A live candle can change until it closes. Missing history, volume units and implementation conventions limit comparisons. No indicator guarantees a direction, an execution price or protection from loss. Use the related lessons to separate definitions, observed values and possible explanations; a correct quiz records learning progress, not trading competence.

Knowledge check

Does TradingHub’s default VWAP automatically reset every midnight?

  1. No; lookback 0 uses the supplied visible bar window
  2. Yes; it is always a daily session VWAP
  3. Yes; its anchor follows every economic release
Show explanation

The current built-in default is cumulative over supplied bars, with optional rolling lookback; it has no automatic daily session reset.
