Read the economic calendar: CPI, jobs and central-bank decisions

Understand release fields, revisions and timing without turning an economic surprise into a deterministic cryptocurrency price prediction.

These lessons provide background; you can still read this page now.

Identify the release and its unit

An event name is not enough. CPI can refer to headline or core inflation, a monthly change, an annual change or an index level. Employment releases can include jobs, unemployment and wages with different units. Record the country, reference period, seasonal adjustment and source so that two numbers actually describe the same series.

Actual, forecast and previous

Actual is the released observation. Forecast normally summarizes an external expectation and is not an official promise. Previous is the earlier observation, which may be revised. A difference between actual and forecast can matter to market expectations, but a vendor’s consensus methodology and collection time affect that comparison. A blank forecast is missing information, not zero.

A numerical surprise

Hypothetical monthly inflation: forecast 0.2%, actual 0.3%. The surprise is +0.1 percentage point, or ten basis points, not a 0.1% relative increase. Relative to 0.2%, the increase is 50%, a different calculation. Use units explicitly. A market move cannot be attributed to this difference alone without considering other simultaneous information.

Read revisions separately

A jobs report can release a new month and revise prior months together. Comparing only the new headline with consensus can miss changed history. Preserve the originally released value and label the revised one. Never silently overwrite a dated research claim with a newer number and present it as what was known at the time.

Timezone and release schedule

Check the official release calendar and the displayed timezone, including daylight-saving changes. A fixed local hour may be wrong after a clock change. Scheduled time is not a guarantee that every data vendor updates immediately. Distinguish the event timestamp from the time the browser received or rendered it.

Central-bank communication has several parts

A policy decision, statement, projections and press conference can convey different information at different times. A widely expected decision can be followed by a market reaction to the outlook. Do not compress every policy event into a rule that lower rates make crypto rise or that higher inflation always produces a particular direction.

Connect the calendar with observed market data

The terminal already provides release descriptions and a calendar. For a review, preserve a pre-event and post-event observation using matching intervals and sources. Funding, OI and execution can help describe positioning and activity, but they do not identify every participant’s motive. Missing or delayed observations should remain marked rather than reconstructed as measured facts.

Use a reproducible event note

Record the official source, series, units, consensus provider, actual value, revisions, timezone and observation window. Separate numerical surprise, market reaction and a possible explanation into different sentences. The exercise below uses hypothetical values. This guide does not forecast prices, prescribe trading around releases or promise that an event will create an opportunity.

Practical scenario

Calculate actual minus forecast in percentage points, not relative percent.

The arithmetic surprise does not determine a market direction.

Knowledge check

Forecast CPI is 0.2% and actual CPI is 0.3%. What is the difference?

  1. 0.1 percentage point
  2. 0.1% relative growth
  3. A guaranteed crypto price decline
Show explanation

0.3% − 0.2% = 0.1 percentage point. This arithmetic does not predict a market direction.
