Funding rate: payments, intervals and formula limits

Read perpetual funding as a product-specific payment, distinguish estimates from settled rates, and compare intervals and costs without treating funding as a price forecast.

Why perpetual contracts use funding

Perpetual futures have no fixed expiration. Funding is a payment mechanism intended to help keep their pricing aligned with a reference market. It is separate from an execution fee and from interest on a spot-margin loan. For a common convention, positive funding means longs pay shorts and negative funding reverses the direction. Check the specific product and account rules.

A sign is not an exact spot-price comparison

Some venues combine a time-weighted premium index with an interest component, clamping and rate caps. Positive funding therefore does not prove that the last trade is currently above spot, and negative funding does not identify a particular trader’s entry. The reference index, impact prices and averaging window can differ from the prices visible in a single screenshot.

Calculate the payment in the right units

For a simplified linear contract, funding payment magnitude is eligible position notional multiplied by the settled funding rate. A hypothetical $10,000 position and +0.01% rate give $1 for that settlement. A long pays and a short receives under the convention above. Inverse contracts may define value and settlement in the base asset; do not silently apply a dollar formula to them.

Predicted is different from settled

A displayed current or estimated rate may change before settlement. Confirm the settlement timestamp, interval and whether a position is eligible at that time. An eight-hour schedule is not universal and can change by contract. Closing around the boundary does not guarantee avoiding a payment because the venue has its own processing and eligibility rules.

Compare intervals before annualizing

At unchanged rates and notional, +0.01% every eight hours gives three $1 payments per day on $10,000, while +0.01% every hour gives twenty-four. This is arithmetic under a fixed assumption, not a return forecast. Compare consistent observation times and intervals. Price PnL, basis, fees, slippage and changes in collateral can outweigh funding receipts.

Use evidence rather than a directional shortcut

Funding alone does not establish bullishness, bearishness, crowding or a profitable hedge. Combine the correctly defined rate with open interest units, observed executions and source coverage. The funding calculator illustrates a stated scenario; the live funding page shows available provider observations. Neither sees your complete account. Use the funding-arbitrage lesson to distinguish spot-plus-perpetual hedges from two-perpetual spreads.

Knowledge check

For a simplified linear $10,000 long at settled +0.01% funding, what is the payment under the usual sign convention?

  1. The long receives $100
  2. The long pays $1 for that settlement
  3. The position always earns $1 per day
Show explanation

10,000 × 0.0001 = $1 paid by the long for one eligible settlement. The next rate and the settlement interval must be checked separately.
