Price channel: rolling extremes and the current-bar trap

A price channel marks rolling highest highs and lowest lows.

What the indicator measures

A price channel marks rolling highest highs and lowest lows. It makes the selected range explicit without weighting closes or estimating volatility. The two bounds describe observations in the window. Their presence does not establish where pending orders sit or how price will behave when it revisits them.

Calculation and units

The Studio template sets upper = highest(high, N) and lower = lowest(low, N), default N=20. Both functions include the current candle and require a complete window. This is an extremes channel, related to Donchian-style boundaries, rather than an ATR or standard-deviation envelope.

Worked educational example

If the window’s highest high is 110 and lowest low 90, its bounds are 110 and 90. If the current candle makes a new high at 120, the inclusive upper boundary becomes at least 120 immediately. Comparing that same close with the newly updated upper band is not a test against yesterday’s boundary.

Reading it without overclaiming

A current close cannot exceed its own candle high in valid OHLC data. A rule requiring it to close above an inclusive current highest-high band is therefore structurally different from a breakout of a previous band. A previous-band reference must be explicitly defined and is not added automatically by this template.

How TradingHub implements it

Price channel is a Studio template, not a native checkbox. It defaults to twenty bars and plots two boundaries with fill between them; no midpoint is plotted by this template. Extremes depend on the supplied history and can jump when an old high or low leaves the window.

Comparisons that matter

Bollinger and Keltner Channels use statistical or range-scaled distances around an average, while this channel uses actual window extremes. Record whether a proposed comparison uses the current band or the last completed band, and evaluate failed breakouts as well as selected successful examples.

A reproducible chart review

Open the existing Trading chart and choose the same market, interval and closed observation time as your comparison. Record every calculation parameter before changing one at a time. Match source fields, history length and the bar window. Native indicators calculate from the supplied visible slice; Indicator Studio calculates from its available chart snapshot. A difference after panning may therefore be a window or warmup effect rather than a new market event.

Limits and next lesson

The illustration uses constructed candles, not a dated market observation or a backtest. A live candle can change until it closes. Missing history, volume units and implementation conventions limit comparisons. No indicator guarantees a direction, an execution price or protection from loss. Use the related lessons to separate definitions, observed values and possible explanations; a correct quiz records learning progress, not trading competence.

Knowledge check

Does the Studio price channel include the current bar in its highest high?

  1. No; it always excludes the current candle
  2. No; it shows tomorrow’s range
  3. Yes; a previous-band breakout needs an explicit historical reference
Show explanation

The highest/lowest functions are inclusive rolling windows, so current extremes immediately affect the band.
