What the indicator measures

Ichimoku combines several range-midpoint lines and time-shifted series. Understanding what was known when a line was calculated is essential. Plotting a value to the right does not give it access to future prices, and plotting a later close to the left does not make it available to a trader at that earlier time.

Calculation and units

Tenkan and Kijun are midpoints of rolling highest highs and lowest lows. Span A averages Tenkan and Kijun; Span B is a longer range midpoint. The spans are displayed forward by the displacement, while Chikou displays closes backward. These are midpoints of extremes, not averages of every closing price.

Worked educational example

A window high of 110 and low of 90 has midpoint 100 regardless of where its intervening closes sit. If Tenkan is 100 and Kijun 104, raw Span A is 102. With displacement 26 it is plotted 26 bars later; that horizontal shift is not a forecast of a price of 102.

Reading it without overclaiming

Cloud position and line ordering describe a multi-period structure. They can whipsaw in ranges and lag rapid changes. Reading a historical Chikou point as if its later close were already known introduces look-ahead bias. Keep calculation time distinct from the horizontal position of the plotted value.

How TradingHub implements it

The native defaults are 9/26/52 with displacement 26; all four are configurable. The chart shifts within actual bar indexes rather than creating future placeholder candles. Leading spans consequently do not project into empty future chart space, and the latest displaced Chikou positions lack later closes.

Comparisons that matter

EMA summarizes weighted closes, whereas Ichimoku’s lines summarize range extremes and shifted timing. Equal-looking periods do not make those values interchangeable. Begin by identifying Tenkan, Kijun, both spans and Chikou on closed bars before studying their combinations.

A reproducible chart review

Open the existing Trading chart and choose the same market, interval and closed observation time as your comparison. Record every calculation parameter before changing one at a time. Match source fields, history length and the bar window. Native indicators calculate from the supplied visible slice; Indicator Studio calculates from its available chart snapshot. A difference after panning may therefore be a window or warmup effect rather than a new market event.

Limits and next lesson

The illustration uses constructed candles, not a dated market observation or a backtest. A live candle can change until it closes. Missing history, volume units and implementation conventions limit comparisons. No indicator guarantees a direction, an execution price or protection from loss. Use the related lessons to separate definitions, observed values and possible explanations; a correct quiz records learning progress, not trading competence.

Knowledge check

Does a forward-displaced cloud line contain future market observations?

  1. Yes; it forecasts actual future candles
  2. Yes; the chart downloads future prices
  3. No; displacement changes where an already calculated value is drawn
Show explanation

The source observations precede calculation; a horizontal drawing shift does not add future information.
